Bamboo Flooring from Teragren
Environmentally smart If you are one of the growing number of consumers, design professionals and builders seeking ways to incorporate "green" products into your home and projects, you will find Teragren an experienced partner and valuable resource. Sustainably harvested For Teragren bamboo flooring, stair parts, trim, panels and veneer, we use only Optimum 5.5™ Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens) known for its dense fibers and grown in the Zhejiang province of China. We also require that the bamboo is sustainably harvested at maturity, every 5-1/2 to 6 years. With these specifications, we avoid product performance problems like cupping and warping associated with young, soft and often inexpensive bamboo that is harvested to soon. As a result, Teragren products are exceptionally durable and our source plants remain vigorous and healthy harvest after harvest. Is all bamboo flooring alike? No. Some bamboo flooring lasts longer. Some installs more easily. Some can be easily re-coated. Some emits VOCs like formaldehyde at much lower levels. It all depends upon how it is manufactured. Teragren provides an abundance of choices in flooring style, color and installation method, as well as information on our specifications and test results available here on our web site. Is there a grading system for bamboo flooring? No. Traditional hardwood flooring is graded (No. 1 Common, Select, etc.) according to certain standards. However, no U.S. or international grading standards exist for bamboo flooring. You must rely on the manufacturer's standards and warranties. Teragren bamboo flooring, for example, comes with a 25-year structural warranty and a 25-year residential/5-year commercial finish warranty (except for Spectrum flooring). How hard is the bamboo? Hardness is the main factor in durability. Bamboo flooring can be as soft as pine and harder than maple depending on the species of bamboo used and when it was harvested. Teragren specifies only Optimum 5.5™ Moso bamboo harvested at maturity (5-1/2 to 6 years) when fiber density peaks. As a result, Teragren bamboo averages 25 percent harder than red oak and 12 percent harder than North American maple. (Teragren's Synergy strand bamboo flooring is twice as hard as oak due to our patented manufacturing process.) Here on our web site, you will find Janka ball test results and other performance data on every Teragren product. |
